📋 5 Simple Fixes You Can Try Right Now (No Tools Required)

We’ve helped hundreds of homeowners in Kent, Covington, and Auburn avoid unnecessary service calls. About half the time, one of these steps restores cool air. Work through them in order.

1️⃣ Thermostat Check – 30 seconds

  • Is the system set to “COOL” (not Off, Heat, or Em Heat)?
  • Is the target temperature at least 5° below the current room temperature?
  • Replace batteries if the screen is blank or frozen.
  • Pro tip: If you have a programmable schedule, make sure it hasn’t switched to “Away” or a higher temp.

2️⃣ Air Filter – 2 minutes

  • Locate your filter (usually in the furnace, air handler, or return vent).
  • Hold it up to light – can you see through it? If not, it’s clogged.
  • Replace immediately with the same size. A dirty filter is the #1 reason ACs freeze or blow weak air.
  • ➡️ Local note: Seattle area’s pollen and wildfire smoke clog filters faster than average – check every 30 days in summer.

3️⃣ Outdoor Unit (Condenser) Inspection – 5 minutes

  • Turn off power at the breaker or outdoor disconnect box.
  • Clear away weeds, grass, leaves, and debris from around the unit (need 2+ feet clearance).
  • Gently hose off the fins from the inside out – do NOT use a pressure washer.
  • Turn power back on and listen: does the fan start smoothly?

4️⃣ Electrical Panel & Disconnect – 2 minutes

  • Find the breaker labeled “AC” or “Condenser” – if it’s tripped (middle position), flip to OFF, then ON.
  • Locate the gray disconnect box near the outdoor unit. Pull the handle out and push it back in firmly.
  • If the breaker trips again immediately, stop – there’s a short or bad compressor. Call us (253) 300-0052.

5️⃣ Check for Frozen Coils – 3 minutes + 2‑4 hours thaw time

  • Open the indoor unit (air handler or furnace). Look for ice on the copper lines or the coil itself.
  • If you see ice: Turn the system OFF. Set the fan to “ON” (not Auto) to blow room air over the coil and speed up melting.
  • Wait 2‑4 hours until completely dry. Then try cooling again.
  • If it freezes again within a few hours: You likely have a refrigerant leak or severe airflow issue – that’s a job for an EPA‑certified technician.

⚠️ When DIY Ends and GreenTop Begins

You’ve checked everything above, but your AC still isn’t cooling. Don’t worry – that’s exactly why we exist. The most common hidden culprits are:

  • 🔧 Refrigerant leaks (requires special equipment and certification)
  • ⚡ Failing capacitor or contactor (the “start” parts)
  • 🌀 Compressor failure (the heart of your AC)
  • 🌬️ Duct leaks or blockages (common in older Kent homes)
