Federal tax credits of up to $2,000 are now available to all households regardless of income for qualifying heat pumps under the IRA.
Ducted heat pump systems can qualify in two ways:
1. Systems that have earned the ENERGY STAR label are eligible.
2. Systems designated as “ENERGY STAR Cold Climate” with an EER2 rating greater than or equal to 10.
Mini-split (non-ducted) systems can also qualify in two ways:
1. AHRI-certified systems with:

SEER2 rating greater than or equal to 16

EER2 rating greater than or equal to 12

HSPF rating greater than or equal to 9
2. AHRI-certified "ENERGY STAR Cold Climate" systems with:

Keep in mind that products need to be rated under the new ENERGY STAR (version 6.1) which became effective January 1, 2023.

File your taxes and claim the tax credit on your tax return.
You will need to file form 5695 to claim the tax credit (officially called the Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit). There are no income requirements to be eligible for the tax credit. Consult your tax advisor as necessary.
Any combination of heat pumps, heat pump water heaters and biomass stoves/boilers are subject to an annual total limit of $2000.
Yes and no.
The IRA included point of sale rebates for qualifying heat pumps based on household income. Unfortunately, the details about how these rebates will work and who will be eligible are still being worked out by our state legislature and are not expected to roll out until sometime in 2024.
